Our selection process
We let you know by email if you are selected for interview and you may also have to provide references before the interview.
Interview arrangements
The selection panel assess all applicants against the requirements of the job description and person specification to decide who to interview.
As soon as we reach a decision, we contact the selected applicants (normally within three weeks of the closing date) by email.
This email includes:
- the interview date, time and place.
- information on if you need to prepare a presentation or send us example work before the interview
- any other special requirements.
We are committed to ensure all staff and potential employees are treated equitably.
Email recruitment@sussex.ac.uk if you need us to make any reasonable adjustments to the interview process and venue.
Travel and subsistence expenses
To claim back your travel and subsistence expenses, you need to send claim forms and a scan of your receipts in one document to invoices@sussex.ac.uk within six months of the interview date.
The selection event expenses claim form is included with your interview invitation and we normally pay expenses within one month of receiving the claim.
If you are a successful candidate, you'll be reimbursed soon after you've taken up your appointment. If an offer of appointment is rejected, we only pay claims in exceptional circumstances.
References
In some cases, we need to seek references before the interview. In others we will only seek references after an interview.
We must have at least two references from previous employers before we appoint you (three for academics).
Interviews
You will normally be interviewed by a panel which includes the line manager and senior members of a school or department.
If you are a candidate for an academic or senior role, we will often ask you to give a presentation on a relevant topic as part of the interview. This will be set out when we invite you to interview.
In some cases, there may be second or even third interviews.
In all cases, we do our best to ensure you are given fair and appropriate opportunities to demonstrate your abilities to do the job.
You may need to bring original qualification certificates and proof of professional registration to the interview.
Job offer
Once the interviews are complete the panel select a preferred candidate.
It is usual practice for the chair of the panel to telephone the preferred candidate in the first instance.
If you accept the offer of employment, we'll ask you for a start date so that we can prepare and send your offer of employment.
The offer is made subject to satisfactory references, occupational health clearance and the right to work in the UK.
There may be other conditions and these would also be set out in the offer letter.
